CE Requirements for
Hawaii Board of Nursing
Hawaii RN licensees must meet a 'continuing competency' requirement prior to renewal every two years. The specific number of hours or learning activity details are contained in the Continuing Competency Booklet (not fully reproduced on this page). Requirements began July 1, 2017, with first compliance required for 2019 renewal. Exemptions may apply. The board conducts random audits to verify compliance. Preceptor forms are available for nurses serving as preceptors for employees or students. Criminal History Record Check (electronic fingerprinting) is also required for renewal, restoration, and reactivation. Licenses not renewed by June 30 of the odd-numbered year are considered forfeited; RN licenses may be restored within 2 years of expiration before requiring full new application.
