CE Requirements for
Iowa Board of Behavioral Health Professionals
At the second license renewal, the six hours must address Iowa mental health laws and regulations or risk management. At subsequent renewals, hours may address ethical issues, federal mental health laws and regulations, Iowa mental health laws and regulations, or risk management.
Iowa Code section 232.69(3)(b) requires renewal attestation of recent child abuse identification and reporting training (an initial two-hour course within six months of employment, with a one-hour recertification every three years thereafter). Iowa Code section 235B.16(5)(b) imposes a parallel requirement for dependent adult abuse identification and reporting. Both are administered by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. Per IAC 481-881.2(11)(c)(1), these hours may be claimed toward the forty-hour total, but only to the extent needed to maintain compliance with the underlying certification. The biennial compliance period runs from July 1 of an even-numbered year through June 30 of the next even-numbered year. A combined maximum of thirty hours per biennium may be used for scholarly research, preparation of new courses, and presentations to other professionals. Licensees issued an initial license within six months of the renewal date are not required to renew until the next renewal two years later. Per IAC 481-881.2(4), first-time psychology licensees are exempt from continuing education at first renewal. Board members may claim up to two of the six required hours by serving on the board (one hour for three meetings, two hours for six meetings during the biennium). Documentation must be retained for four years for audit. The board does not pre-approve providers or programs; licensees determine whether a program meets the criteria of IAC 481-881.2(9).
CE courses from providers approved by these accreditors count toward your Iowa Licensed Psychologist renewal requirements.
