CE Requirements for
Louisiana State Board of Dentistry
Current CPR or BLS for healthcare providers certification must be maintained at all times; the board awards three clinical credit hours toward the renewal total for successful completion of a basic life support course under LAC 46:XXXIII.§1611.
Required one time during a dentist's career; counts toward the thirty-hour renewal total and satisfies the renewal requirement in full once completed. A dentist may be exempted by certifying that he or she has not prescribed, administered, or dispensed any controlled-dangerous-substance during the renewal period.
Required for dentists holding moderate sedation, general anesthesia, or comparable adult sedation permits; the board awards up to sixteen credit hours toward the renewal total for first certification and three credit hours for recertification.
Required for dentists holding pediatric moderate sedation permits; the board awards up to fourteen credit hours toward the renewal total for first certification and six credit hours for recertification.
Required for dentists holding any level of sedation permit; one in-person adult sedation course pertinent to the permit level, completed each renewal period.
Authority: La. Admin. Code tit. 46, §§ XXXIII.1607 (first-renewal and other exemptions), 1611 (dentist CE), 1615 (approved providers), 1617 (sponsor four-year recordkeeping). Renewal cadence is biennial and group_based, keyed to the licensee's last-name initial at original issuance — see the LSBD FAQs. Dentists renewing their license for the first time are exempt from continuing education for that renewal cycle; the exemption does not apply to maintaining basic life support or to the one-time opioid management requirement. The board does not specify minimum hours for CPR or BLS — it is a maintain-at-all-times credential and earns three clinical credit hours toward the renewal CE total when completed via course 'C,' basic life support for healthcare providers. The board does not specify minimum hours for ACLS or PALS as topics — they are credentials that must be maintained by sedation permit holders and earn up to sixteen and fourteen credit hours respectively toward the renewal CE total for first certification. All CE must be clinical in nature; non-clinical courses are not accepted, and CE ordered as a disciplinary sanction does not count toward the mandatory renewal requirement. All CPR, BLS, ACLS, and PALS cards must be uploaded into the CPR section in CE Broker; report completions through the LSBD CE Broker portal.
CE courses from providers approved by these accreditors count toward your Louisiana Dentist Louisiana renewal requirements.
