CE Requirements for
Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners
Required at initial renewal under LAC 46:XLV.§449; board-sponsored orientation program of at least two hours; one time per licensee, with hour-for-hour credit that counts toward the annual board-approved CME total under §435.
Required for doctors of podiatric medicine who hold a Louisiana Controlled Dangerous Substance license; one time during the licensee's career, covering CDS prescribing best practices, drug diversion, addiction treatment, and chronic pain. The board may grant exemption upon certification of no CDS prescribing, administration, or dispensing during the prior year.
Authority: La. Admin. Code tit. 46, §§ XLV.433-449 (Subchapter K, Continuing Medical Education), applied to allied health care providers including doctors of podiatric medicine per §443. CME details verified against the LSBME Subchapter K PDF (revision LR 47, June 2021) and the LSBME Annual CE Requirements by Practitioner Group sheet (rev. April 2026). LSBME §447 exempts licensees who: (a) are engaged in military service outside Louisiana for longer than one year; (b) have held an initial Louisiana license for less than one year; (c) have been certified or recertified within the past year by an ABMS or AOA-recognized specialty board; (d) are in a board-approved residency; or (e) are in retired status under §418. Licensees must retain CME attendance records for at least four years from the date of each qualifying activity (§439.C); the board may audit any documentation. CME is reported through the board's designated Electronic Education Tracker (EET) under §439; licensees retain responsibility for resolving discrepancies on their CME transcript. All CPR, BLS, ACLS, and CDS certifications and CME documentation must be uploaded into the LSBME-designated CE tracking portal; the CDS-CME course is currently administered through the board itself.
CE courses from providers approved by these accreditors count toward your Louisiana Doctor of Podiatric Medicine renewal requirements.
