CE Requirements for
Maine Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure
Required once during licensure under 32 M.R.S. §13860 (effective January 1, 2020). These hours count toward the total.
Continuing education governed by Board Rules Chapter 7-A (effective November 30, 2009) under statutory authority 32 M.R.S. §§13853(2), 13853(11), 13858(8), and 13860(2). Format cap: a maximum of five contact hours may be claimed combined for informal home study and prerecorded programs. Interactive online programs (live seminars, institutes, workshops, conferences, employer-sponsored in-service training, formal home study, online and other distance learning) are eligible without a numeric cap when documented by a signed certificate of completion. Activity caps per biennium: professional writing — maximum twenty contact hours; teaching graduate academic courses or presenting at institutes, workshops, seminars, and conferences — maximum five contact hours exclusive of preparation time; field supervision of interns — maximum five contact hours (not available to conditional licensees). Optional component: up to fifteen contact hours of the biennial requirement may consist of peer consultation provided by a licensed mental health professional (individual or group), including supervised experience required for licensure or voluntarily solicited supervision. Ineligible activities under Chapter 7-A §4: repetition of the same prerecorded program, elective office or service in professional associations or governmental regulatory boards, supervision pursuant to a board order or consent agreement, computer training, practice management, billing or office management, yoga, energy healing, alternative therapy, and personal growth activities. Audit retention: documentation including a signed certificate from the sponsor, an official academic transcript, or other reliable written proof must be retained for board audit under Office of Licensing and Registration Chapter 13 (Uniform Rule for the Substantiation of Continuing Education Requirements). Inactive status: continuing education is waived during inactive status but is required for reactivation under 10 M.R.S. §8003(5-A)(D)(5), 32 M.R.S. §13864, and Chapter 7 Section 2(5)(A).
