CE Requirements for
Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing
RN licenses renew on the licensee's birthday in even-numbered years on a two-year cycle (LPNs renew in odd years on the same pattern). Per 244 CMR 5.04(1)(a), a contact hour is sixty consecutive minutes of organized learning; one semester credit equals fifteen contact hours and one CEU equals ten contact hours. First renewal is exempt: a new licensee does not need to complete CE for the cycle in which licensure first issues. Retain CE evidence for two consecutive registration periods (four years). CPR coursework, ACLS / PALS re-certification, and employer in-service training do not satisfy the requirement, though initial ACLS / PALS certifications may apply. The Board's mandatory CE page also surfaces the optional Chapter 260 Domestic and Sexual Violence Training resource, but neither MGL c. 112 § 264 nor 244 CMR 5 imposes that training on nurses (the statute lists allied mental health and several other licenses, not nursing under c. 112 §§ 74 through 81C).
CE courses from providers approved by these accreditors count toward your Massachusetts Registered Nurse renewal requirements.
