Virginia Board of Physical Therapy
Volunteer PT practice may contribute toward Type 2 hours.
Board meeting or disciplinary proceeding attendance may contribute toward Type 2 hours.
Physical Therapist Assistants must complete 30 total contact hours per biennium: minimum 15 hours must be Type 1 (board-approved courses directly related to clinical practice of physical therapy); up to 15 hours may be Type 2 (non-approved-organization activities related to clinical practice). One college credit hour equals 15 Type 1 contact hours. Forty hours of clinical supervision equals 1 Type 2 contact hour. APTA specialty certification or graduation from a transitional DPT program may satisfy the full biennium requirement in the applicable renewal period. Licensees are exempt from CE for their first biennial renewal after initial licensure by examination in Virginia. Records must be retained for 4 years post-renewal. Random audits require submission of the Continued Competency Activity and Assessment Form and all supporting documentation within 30 days of notification. Extensions of up to one year may be granted for good cause (written request required before renewal date). Exemptions may be granted for circumstances beyond licensee control (temporary disability, military service, declared disasters) upon written request before renewal date.
CE courses from providers approved by these accreditors count toward your Virginia Physical Therapist Assistant renewal requirements.
